in Shantung, on the 8th,, not far from Tsingtao; after which crossing that province and Chihli, on the 9th., it proceeded to Manchuria where it disappeared, on the 10th, inclining gradually to the NE. During the first days, its presence had somewhat eclipsed that of the second cyclone that was following on its heels at a short distance.
Originating likely, as well as its forerunner, on the Pacific, near the Eastern Marianas, our typhoon passed, from the 5th, to the 6th. August by the south of the Bonin Is. It followed at first a very regular course towards the WNW, and crossed the 25th parallel, on the 6th, near the 140th meridian. Its presence to the SW of the Bonin Is, was manifested, on the 7th, by a new falling of about 10mm of the pressure that had just begun to rise after the passage of the first centre, and by strong ESE breezes, veering to SE on the following day, At the same time, northerly winds started blowing at Naha, and their persistence, joined to the decrease of the pressure, left no doubt about the approach of a serious disturbance, Indeed, the centre passed between that island and Oshima (Naze), crossing the meridian of the last named place after 6 p. m. on the gth, and that of Naha between 9 and 10 a. m. on the 10th; the minimum at Naze was 740mm 7, and at Naha 737mm 2: we give here the observations of the 10th,
6 a. m. | Noon. | ||||
Barom. | Wind | Barom. | Wind
Naha | 738mm | SW. 8 | 737mm. 5 | SSW 9
Oshima | 745mm | E 4 | 746mm. 5 | ESE 5 |
Heavy rain accompanied the passage of the vortex which was already inclining ostensibly towards the W, not far from the 27th degree of latitude, Here it was that the irregular motion began: while the barometer rose at the two preceding stations, it was falling at Ishigakijima, in the Meiaco Sima group, more deeply than on the coast of China, and at the same time the wind had a backing from NW to WNW, increasing to the force 9 which is a strong gale. In northern Formosa, the pressure was falling too, while the wind was veering from WSW to W and blowing with increasing strength,
During the 11th. and the 12th. Ishigakijima was under the full force of the storm; the minimum of pressure appears to have taken place early in the morning of the 12th, and at noon on the same day the report stated that the barometer was rising, while the wind from W force 9, began to veer to WNW (force 9).
From the data we have, scanty as they are, we may infer that between the 11th and the 12th the centre, after hacking to SW, then to the S, and thus approaching the island, had continued to recurve back to the E, then towards the NE, being thus returning in the direction of Naha. The movements of the cyclone between the two islands are well traced in the successive telegrams received here, day by day, from Tôkyô.
