F¤b!'¤¤fy 2% 1893- CHAP. 143,—An act to amend an act entitled "An act to incorporate the Masonic """"”‘1' Mutual Relief Association of the District of Columbia," approved March third, eighteen hundred and sixty-nine. · Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United u!t!2••>¤i€*:P*¤=*},B(*; States of America in Congress assembled, That section three of the act ° www wm' entitled “An act to incorporate the Masonic Mutual Relief Association of the District of Columbia," approved March third, eighteen hundred and sixty-nine, be, and hereby is, amended by inserting in section three, shaman or mm after the words “one of their number as secretary/’ the words, “ and Wd, ,5 p_335_ one of their number or a. member of the association as secretary of the ' association, and the said secretary of the association/’ so that the section shall read: mmm-., “SEc; 3. And be it further enacted, That the number of directors of said association shall be twenty-one. who shall be elected by the members thereof at their annual meeting on the second Tuesday in November in each year, from among themselves, and shall serve as hereinafter ·1·,,,,,_ provided, that is to say: At the annual election held on the second Tuesday in November, eighteen hundred and seventy-five, of the directors then elected the seven who shall receive the largest number of votes shall serve for three ymrs; the seven receiving the next highest number shall serve two years; while the seven remaining who shall receive the next highest number shall serve for one year; and seven shall be elected annually thereafter to serve for three years; in all cases mum of a tie vote, the choice to be determined by lot. And said directors shall, at their first meeting succeeding the annual meeting of the association,elect one of their number to be president of the board of directors, who shall also be president of the association; a11d shall elect one of their number as vicepresident, and one of their number or a. member of the association as secretary of the association, and the said secretary of the association shall give bonds with security to said association in such sum as the board of directors may require for the faithful discharge of his duties; and one of their number as treasurer, who shall also give bonds with surety to said association in such sum as the said board of directors may require for the iaithinl discharge of his q,m.m_ trust. At all meetings of the board of directors a majority of the v¤¤¤u». board shall form a. quorum. Iircase of any vacancy in the board of directors, by death, resignation, or otherwise, such vacancy shall be iilled by the remaining directors, from among the members of said association, who shall serve until the next annual meeting ot me asso ciation, at which time a successor shall be elected to serve for the remainder of the unexpired term." WL u_ ,,_ 335 Also in section five, by striking out the words “ eight hundred " before the word “dollars” at the end of the section, and by adding a proiso, so that the section shall read: mwmormnmm. "Sec. 5. And be it further enacted, That the said board of directors shall be capable of taking and holding the hmds, property, and eftects of said corporation, which innds, property, or etfects shall never be divided among the members of the said society or corporation, but shall descend to their successors, duly elected in the inanner heretofore specified, for the promotion of the principles of the said corporation np¤¤¤e.. and the benevolent purposes of the society which they represent. But this provision shall not prevent the said board of directors from carry- ing out the principles of the society or corporation, viz, the immediate payment of the widow, orphans, heir, assignee, or legatee of a deceased member, as many dollars as there are members in good standing on the norm. books of the corporation, not exceeding one thousand dollars: Provided, That nothing contained in this act shall be construed to impair the ob- Eming amiga_ ligations of the Masonic Mutual ReIiefAssociation existing at the time ¤·¤•- of the approval of this act to pay to the persons mentioned in this sootion an amount not exceeding one thousand eight hundred dollars?
