Where as thi s str eet, border ed by stat ely pu blic buildi ngs a nd by the beautiful Mall and Parkway, within which a re the Nation's monu- ment to George Washington, and memorial to Abraham Lincoln, will be one of the most impressive thoroughfares in the world; and Whereas a street thus connecting the Capital with the Memorial Bridge leading over the Potomac River to Arlington National Cemetery, formerly the home estate of Robert E . Lee, and to the Washington Memo rial Highway which ends at Mount Vernon- a street so rich in historical association and destined during the ce ntu ries to beh old cou ntl ess proc ess ions of Ame ric an p atr iots and millions of liberty-loving men, women, and children, wending their way to Arlington and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier- should have a name in keeping with its character, a name of dignity and beauty and profound significance; and Whereas the Constitution of the United States of America, "the most wonderful work ever struck off at a given time by the brain and the purpose of man," is the mighty instrument which made the land of Washington and Lincoln and Lee "An indissoluble union of indestructible States " from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, from the Atlantic Ocean to the golden shores of the Pacific, the grandest home that Freedom ever knew, under the Changes in names of freest government the world has ever seen : Therefore be it desig nated streets, etc . Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the Constitution Ave . United States of America in Congress assembled, That in honor of nue, formerly B Street . the Constitution of the United States of America, the thoroughfare no w known as B Street northwest, in the District of Columbia, and as it may at any time be extended, widened, or otherwise changed, shall hereafter bear the name " Constitution Avenue ." That the portion of the avenue now known a s "Louisiana Avenue," not absorbed by the enlarging of the park and plan system of the Planning Commission, shall no longer be known as "Louisiana Ave nue ."
