205 purchase of provisions for sale to lighthouse keepers at isolated sta- tions, and the appropriation reimbursed, and not exceeding $8,500 for contingent expenses of the office of the Bureau of Lighthouses in the District of Columbia, $4,500,000 . Keepers of lighthouses : For salaries of not exceeding one thousand eight hundred lighthouse and fog-signal keepers and persons attend- ing lights, exclusive of post lights, 2,070,000. Lighthouse vessels : For salaries and wages of officers and crews of light vessels and lighthouse tend ers, including t emporary employ- ment when necessary, $2,368,360 . Superintendents, clerks, and so forth : Fo r salarie s of eig hteen superintendents of lighthouses, and of assistant superintendents, clerks, draftsmen, and other authorized permanent employees in the district offices and depots of the Lighthouse Service, exclusive of tho se regularly empl oyed in the offi ce of the Bureau of Lighthouses, District of Columbia, $641,340 . Re tir ed pay : For retired pay of officers and employees engaged in the field service or on vessels of the Lighthouse Service, except persons continuously employed in district offices and shops, $324,000 . Public works : For constructing or purchasing and equipping light- house tenders and light vessels for the Lighthouse Service as may be specifically approved by the Secretary of Commerce not to exceed $55 0,000 ; and for establishing and improving aids to navigation an d other works as may be s pecifica lly appr oved by t he Secre tary of Commerce, $804,000 ; in all, $1,354,000 . For every expenditure requisite for and incident to the work of pb le ctsp eci fied . the Coa st and Geod etic S urvey , incl uding maint enance , rep air, exchange, and operation of motor-propelled or horse-drawn vehicles for use in field work, purchase of motor cycles with side cars, includ- in g their exchange, not to exceed $ 1,000, s urveying instrume nts, rubber boots, canvas and rubber gloves, goggles, and caps, coats, and aprons for stewards' departments on vessels, extra compensation at not to exceed $1 per day for eac h statio n to empl oyees of the Lighthouse Service and the Weather Bureau while observing tides or currents, services of one tide observer in the District of Columbia at not to exceed $1 per day, and compensation, not otherwise appropriated for, of persons employed in the field work, commutation to officers of the field force while on field duty, at a rate not exceed- ing $3 per day each, to be expended in accordance with the regula- tions relating to the Coast and Geodetic Survey subscribed by the Distribution . Tides, currents, and so forth : For continuing researches in phys- raph yysica l hyd rog- ical hydrography, relating to harbors and bars, and for tidal and current observations on the coasts of the United States, or other coasts under the jurisdiction of the United States, $27,000 ;
