Approved, December 18, 1929 . CHAP . 9 .-An Act To p rovid e for the construction of a building for the Sup re me Co urt of the United States . Be it enacted by the Senate and Home of Representatives o f the Unite d Sta tes of Ame rica in Co ngres s ass emble d, That the United States Supreme Court Building Commission is authorized and directe d to p rovide for t he con struct ion and equip ment o f a su itable building (including approaches, connections with the Capitol power plant, and ar chitec tural landsc ape tr eatment of th e grou nds) f or the accommodation and ex clusive use of the Su preme Court of the Unite d Sta tes, subs tanti ally in a ccord ance with the plans reco m- mended by the commission in its report to the Seventy-first Congress, first session, with such modifications thereof as may be necessary or advantageous . Such building shall be constructed on the site hereto- fore ac quired for t hat pu rpose and bo unded a nd des cribed as fo llows On the east by Second Street northeast, on the south by East Capitol Street, on the west by First Street northeast, and on the north by Maryland Avenue northeast, being all of square 728 and that portion of square 727 located on the south side of Maryland Avenue northeast as such squares appear on the records in the office of the surveyor of the District of Columbia . Authority is hereby given for closing and vacating such portion of A Street northeast, as lies between such squares, and the portion of such street so closed and vacated shall thereupon become part of such site . The Architect of the Capitol shall serve as executive officer of the commission and shall perform such services under this Act as the commission may direct . SEC . 2 . For the purposes of this Act the Architect of the Capitol is authorized, under the direction of the commission- (1) To provide for the demolition and removal, as expeditiously as possible, of any structures on the site heretofore acquired for the Supreme Court Building ; and (2) To enter into contracts ; to purchase materials, supplies, equip- ment, and accessories in the open market ; to employ the necessary personnel, including architectural, engineering, and other profes- sional services without reference to section 35 of the Act approved June 25, 1910 ; and to make such expenditures, including expenditures for advertising and travel and the purchase of technical and reference books, as may be necessary . SEC . 3. There is hereby authorized to be appropriated the sum of $9,740 .000, or so much thereof as may be necessary, to enable the commis sion t o carr y out the pr ovisio ns of t his Ac t . Appropriations made under authority of this Act shall be disbursed by the disbursing off ic er of the Department of the Interior. Approved, December 20, 1929 . Contract
