UNPARDONABLE SIN.




1 John, v. 16.

There is a Sin unto death

THIS sin which St. John calls here, "The sin unto death,” is the unpardonable sin against the Holy Ghost described by our blessed Saviour Matth. xii. 32. That whosoever commits it, hath no forgiveness, neither in this world nor in the world to come; For, "All manner of sin and blasphemy, shall be forgiven unto men; but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost, shall not be forgiven unto men. And he that speaketh a word against the Son, it shall he forgiven him; but whosoever speaks against the Holy Ghost, shall never be forgiven, neither in this world, nor in the world to come." This sin against the Holy Ghost, is that sin which St John calls here, "The sin unto death." Not because that sin deserves death alone, for so does all sin deserve death both temporal and eternal: "For the wages of sin, even all sin, is death." Rom. vi. 23. But this sin against the Holy Ghost
