8 Siward was an Essex thegn with many scattered manors, almost all of which had been obtained by Ranulf Peverel. Among these was Tolleshunt (Darcy) adjoining Tollesbury, which accounts for Siward's appearing here. The abbess evidently denied that this was ' thegnland ' and claimed it as part of the inalienable demesnes of her house.
