at least till there should be another attempt to reëlect President Juarez. These hopes were, however, destined to disappointment. A pronunciamiento of a seditious character occurred in Mérida, Yucatan, in January and February, which was summarily suppressed, and a number put to death by Colonel Ceballos. These executions were regarded throughout Mexico as but little better than assassinations.[1] The Indians also were troublesome here. After the restoration of the supreme authority of Mexico over Yucatan, the state was regularly allowed pecuniary

resources, which with its revenue sufficed to meet all expenses, even leaving a balance over. But early in 1869 the general government stopped the supplies, and then the state treasury was obliged to support the troops on the Indian frontier.[2]
