It was then a barren waste, though now it is a place of exile for enemies of the Master. Years went by, with many secret expeditions, before they could get a full knowledge of what had happened. After that, the efforts of everyone in the New America were bent to overcoming those inhuman beings who ruled the Earthband.
"Aviation was developed to the utmost, for that was the Master's weak point. Vertical control—what was called helicopter control in your time—is now used in all our flying machines. Our inventors and scientists have perfected hundreds of other things which have aided the cause. Voice projection, which I used in demanding your surrender, is one of them. At last we felt sure the Earthband would be helpless to defend itself when we attacked. We even made one or two practise flights here, on dark nights when we would not be seen. Our spies selected tonight as the best time to attack, for all the counselors and officials were to be at the Palace. And we have succeeded, for our men are sure to capture them within a few hours."
As he concluded his story, the leader smiled quietly down at Betty and Graham, who were listening in a daze.
"I know it will take some time to appreciate these many changes that time has made," he said gently.
