DOWNING, Bernice C. (Miss), born in Newark, Missouri, daughter of Nathan H. and Ida R. Downing, a resident of California for forty years. Editor and newspaper woman. With her late sister, Miss Bertha Downing, they were the first women in California to actually own, edit, and publish their own newspaper, having inherited the Santa Clara Journal from their father on his death in 1905. Has held several offices in the League of American Pen Women and in the National Editorial Ass'n. In 1927, won a specially created prize by the Omaha Chamber of Commerce for the best paper written on a tour of Nebraska and Black Hills of South Dakota. This contest was open to all members of the National Editorial Ass'n. For several years member of Santa Clara County Republican Committee. Appointed postmaster of Santa Clara in 1928, by the late President Harding, and reappointed to office in 1927, by President Coolidge.
