FOLTZ, Clara Shortridge (Mrs.), a native of Indiana, daughter of Elias W. and Telitha Harwood Shortridge. Married to the late Jeremiah Ricliard Foltz. Children: David M., Virginia Foltz Catron. Came to California with parents in early youth. Settled in San Jose, where she began the study of law. Was the first woman admitted to practice law on the Pacific Coast. Author of many statutes for the benefit of women. Denied admission to Hastings College of the Law solely on account of sex, she sued out a writ of mandate against its Board of Directors, and after a long-fought battle, she won her case and entered the College. She is the author of Sec. 18, Art. 20, Constitution of California, which provides that no person shall, on account of sex, be disqualified from entering upon or pursuing any lawful business, vocation, or profession.
