The potato was domesticated and eaten in southern Peru and northwestern Bolivia as early as 7,000–10,000 years ago. So Prus' elliptical statement that "100 years ago, people did not eat potatoes" is misleading. He obviously meant that they weren't eaten in Europe. He was, after all, writing for Poles (who are Europeans).

A solution would be to modify the interpolation to "[in Europe–translator]".

We do not do readers a favor by leaving the author's wording in a misleading condition. Another such clarifying interpolation is "[Neptune]" after "planet", where Prus discusses the discovery of that planet without naming it.

Explanatory interpolations, with attribution, are sometimes necessary.

As per discussion above, I have added "–Translator" to "[in Europe]", thus: "[in Europe –Translator]".

This is merely a necessary explanatory interpolation which otherwise in no way affects the author's text.

I have made 6 analogous "–Translator" additions on page 12 [8].

There are no other bracketed interpolations in Prus' article.
