THE BROKEN GLASS

A sudden crash! A glass upon the floor,
Shatter'd in myriad pieces. A white face
Turned by a little maid toward the door,
Expectant of shrill reprimand—nay, more.
Ah! little maid, 'tis well if future store,
When Time hath furnish'd thee with fuller grace,
Shall not so shatter some fair glass of thine—
Illusion, bubble-blown, of hues divine.
