Life's Vicissitudes
In some far recess of the heartFond Contemplation holds apart,Ambition moves as though it wereA dream ship of the heart's desire; And through the tempest of our moods,The ship brings life's vicissitudes. The cargo is each homely traitOf love and scorn and trust and hate,The noble always with the base;Yet we can sense no equal grace,We ever are too blind to seeOur promised immortality.
