LINES ON HEARING A CHILD LAUGH AT PLAY.
Laugh on—thy heart is light,With thy merry, merry tone; For thou hast never felt the blightThat hath subdued mine own.
Laugh on—I love to gazeOn that blushing smile of thine,For, oh! it tells of other days,When such fleeting mirth was mine.
Laugh on—it will rejoiceMy lonely heart to hearThe silvery music of thy voice,For the happy sound is dear.
Laugh on—thy joyous heartHath never felt a care,Or such light tones of merrimentWould never linger there.
Laugh on—and may that smileLong circle o'er thy brow; And mayst thou never, never feelThe anguish I do now.
