CHRISTMAS HYMN.[1]
'MID Bethelem's jarring strifeAngelic watch was kept,O'er where, with newly throbbing life,A Jewish infant slept.
For Him the angel bandPeals forth its song of praise,And Eastern sages wondering stand,And worship as they gaze.
A child of mortal birth,Yet unto Him was givenTo lead the erring sons of earthRepentant into Heaven.
The babe of BethlehemIs Zion's Lord and King;Adore Him all ye sons of men,And loud His praises sing.
The world's Redeemer—HeThe sceptre shall maintain,Till every creature bend the knee,And God alone shall reign.
Saviour, we claim a partWith angel choirs above;Inspire our every tongue and heartTo chant Thine endless love.
  1. This, and the two Hymns following, were written by request, for public occasions.
