FAREWELL.
I've breathed "farewell," in other years, With careless heart and brow;My heart is strangely altered since, I cannot do it now;It thrills each chord within my soul, 'Tis like a funeral knell;O let mine eyes their language speak, I cannot say, "farewell."
They tell me when the lips move not, The heart more deeply feels,That gentler grows the load of grief, By every tear that steals;I weep, but still a fresh despair Around my heart will swell; We cannot hope to meet again, Yet dare not say, 'farewell."
A moment longer, and we part; Time flies, alas! how fast! One trembling pressure of the hand, One look—it is the last.It is our heavenly Father's will, And he does all things well;In Heaven may we all meet at last, No more to say "farewell."
