FAREWELL.
I've breathed "farewell," in other years,With careless heart and brow;My heart is strangely altered since,I cannot do it now;It thrills each chord within my soul,'Tis like a funeral knell;O let mine eyes their language speak,I cannot say, "farewell."
They tell me when the lips move not,The heart more deeply feels,That gentler grows the load of grief,By every tear that steals;I weep, but still a fresh despairAround my heart will swell; We cannot hope to meet again,Yet dare not say, 'farewell."
A moment longer, and we part;Time flies, alas! how fast! One trembling pressure of the hand,One look—it is the last.It is our heavenly Father's will,And he does all things well;In Heaven may we all meet at last,No more to say "farewell."
