A Little Child.
Only a tiny hand-clasp,
Only an accent mild,
Only a pattering footstep,
But that of a little child.

Only blue eyes uplifted,
Only a pleading filed,
Only a heart in yearning,
And that of a little child.

Only a trust in keeping,
Only to be beguiled,
Only glistening tear-drops—
The blood of a little child.

Only a heart grown callous,
Only a soul denied,
Only a saddened memory—
A neglected little child.
