EARLY FALL
Sweet Summer spent her latest days, while here,
In making rare designs for Autumn's dress;
Today, in conscious grief around her bier,
Doth Autumn moan aloud in dire distress!
Her chilly fingers with the sunbeams play
Unconsciously, as they lay in her lap,
While, ever and anon, the tear-drops stray
Adown her cheek for the earth to entrap.
