SEA GULLS
(BILOXI)
THREE gulls flying in over the gulf,Gray, as the waters are gray,On their out-spread wings the glancing light,On their breasts the up-tossed spray.
Out of the foam-white reaches they comeHeading straight into the shore,Weary with glorious circles of flightWhere the wind-born billows roar.
And two in the lead fly wing-and-wing,With the joy of living elate,But the one that lags so far behind—It has lost its life long mate.
And to gull of the sea or man of the shoreWho the joy of loving has knownThe way is long and the way is darkWhen it's traveled alone, alone.
