VIGNETTES
SOMEWHERE upon a quiet strandThe little waves run home,And somewhere o'er the hidden rocksThe white-caps snarl and foam.
Somewhere the gray gulls lonesomelyAgainst the azure float,And somewhere on the sunlit seaThere sails a fisher's boat.
Somewhere high up upon the cliffA woman's straining eyesSee just beyond the fore-doomed boatA whip of wind arise.

Somewhere within the city's stirThe guarded feet run safe,And somewhere on the cruel curbThere strays the sordid waif.
Somewhere beneath the softened lightA woman wears love's crown,And somewhere in the shadow's lustAnother's soul goes down.
For storms at sea will rock and wreckThe fisher's cockleshell. And on the heartless city's streetsAre spread the snares of hell.
