Poems (Linn)/The Little Deed

THE LITTLE DEED.
NO act awaits the usual toiling throng That calls for strength and valor to be done; The days of tilts and jousts are long outrun,Of crusade, pilgrimage, and minstrel song.
Our lives from day to day are but the sum Of little things that happen everywhere, Full of the commonplace of toil and care,Of word and deed that with each moment come.
The little deed, but oh, how hard to do! Harder than battle of the noisy field, To meet life's daily temptings and not yield,To smile in spite of sorrow and be true.
