THE ANSWER OF THE GARDENER.
He leant, at sunset, on his spade.
(Oh, but the child was sweet to see,
The one who in the orchard played!)
He called: "I've planted you a tree!"

The boy looked at it for a while,
Then at the radiant woods below;
And said, with wonder in his smile—
"Why don't you put the leaves on, though?"

The gardener, with a reverent air,
Lifted his eyes, took off his hat—
"The Other Man, the One up there,"
He answered, "He must see to that."
