MUSINGS.
In vain the laughing Spring returnsIn beauteous mantle fair,And budding flowers unfolding bloomTo greet the genial air.
In vain the rising sun displaysHis radiant beams afar,And softer glories mildly blazeIn the fair evening star.
In vain the looming cloud, that softDistils the grateful shower,And calls the latent beauties forthFrom each expanding flower.
Though renovation's joyous breathGlide through the liquid air,And breezes soft, on silken wing,Salubrious odors bear;
Though smiling verdure dress the fieldsIn every varying shade,And songs of sweetest melodyThe fragrant grove pervade;
Yet sad the fainting eyes move o'erThe once delighting scene:The halcyon prospect tells no moreOf happiness serene.
Now, no bright thoughts the flowing hoursMark with a soft delight,—Nor fancy feeds on fadeless flowersIn fairer realms of light.
