Works about Elijah Puckett
[edit]- "Elijah Puckett, son of Zachariah and Edith (Kester) Puckett, was born on 4 March 1815 according to all accounts. Most records show his birthplace as Randolph County, Indiana, but it is most likely that he was actually born in Surry County, North Carolina, and brought to Indiana as a small boy. His daughter, Sylvia Ann (Puckett) Petty, listed her father's place of birth as North Carolina in the 1900 Census, and I believe she is correct. It is most likely that his mother was Edith Kester and that she died shortly after his birth. His father then remarried to Edith Jackson in Surry County, North Carolina in 1817 and moved to Randolph County, Indiana in 1819. Thus Elijah Puckett was raised by her. By then she, too, had become a Quaker, and Elijah was raised as a Quaker. In the records of the White River Monthly Meeting of Randolph County, we find a note that Elijah Puckett was 'complained for deviation from plainness and attending places of diversion' and disowned on 12 March 1838. Elijah Puckett, a farmer, was married to Catherine Keever, daughter of Adam and Mary (Hunter) Keever, in Delaware County, Indiana, by Abraham Kline, Justice of the Peace, on 16 November 1843. (Delaware County was created from Randolph County in 1827). They continued to live there until 1855 when they moved to central Iowa, where they stayed for only a short time before moving to Jasper Township in Carroll County, Iowa. There they settled in what became known as the old Pioneer Farm on the banks Basceen of the Raccoon River, between the towns of Glidden and Lake City. Elijah Puckett was active in the civic affairs of Carroll County, and he was a member of the first jury of Carroll County. The family was also active in the Christian Church there. Elijah Puckett died in Carroll County, Iowa, 28 August 1896, and his wife, Catherine Puckett died 30 May 1904. They are both buried in the Cottonwood Cemetery in Lake City, Iowa."
- William Mahon (1915)
- Biography of his son-in-law. "On the 22d of December, 1897, Mr. Mahon was again married, his second union being with Miss Julia A. Puckett, who was born in Randolph county, Indiana, July 7, 1851, a daughter of Elijah and Katherine (Keever) Puckett. Her father came to Iowa in 1854, settling in Guthrie county, and the following year removed to Carroll county, entering three hundred and forty acres of government land in the northern part of that county. That land was still to be secured in that way was an indication of the pioneer conditions which existed. He shared in all the hardships and privations of frontier life and bore his part in advancing the early development and improvement of the section in which he lived. As the years passed on great changes were wrought, the wild prairie country being transformed into fine farms which were the homes of a prosperous and contented people. Mr. Puckett died in the year 1896, while his wife survived until 1904."
- "Elijah Puckett, who was born in 1815, and settled in Jasper township in 1855 or 1856 and there resided until the date of his death, August 30, 1896, The writer has known Mr. Puckett since 1871 and can testify to his sterling qualities; a man of action rather than words, and most trusted by those who best know him."
- East Liberty and Buck Run (1895)
- "We are glad to write that the latest report is that Elijah Puckett is better with good hopes of a full recovery."
