[edit]- Congress amended non-positive law and returned the Social Security Administration to the status of an independent agency in the executive branch of government in 1994, which had previously been an agency of the HHS.
- It was renamed the Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) on October 17, 1979, when its education functions were transferred to the newly created United States Department of Education under the Department of Education Organization Act.
