I have been jamming a lot of RR speeches into the 1980s section. Mostly just as an idle experiment. How will this page look when we have all the State of the Union Speeches? This stuff really adds up. [[PaulinSaudi 16:38, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)]]

If the page becomes too large we can just create sub-pages for each decade in the same way as the author page has been divided by letter. Another possibility is to divide the speeches by type, i.e. collecting all the State of the Union Speeches in one page and all the Inaugural Addresses in another. Christian S 18:12, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

I think that for the sake of organization, it would be more beneficial to divide the speeches by type--or at least add categories for the large collection of speeches like Inaugurals and State of the Unions. Putting such a vast number of speeches really seems like it clutters up the section. And it will make searching the Speeches category easier because those who want to read Inaugurals will know exactly where the whole collection is and those who want to read just plain speeches won't be assaulted by the multitude of Inaugurals and State of the Unions. Zhaladshar 18:27, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Yes, I think you're right. Organization by type will make the speeches easier to browse, subpages can then be created for types with many entries. Christian S 19:02, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Agreed, but no real need to act now. Just eventually. [[PaulinSaudi 19:08, 10 Jun 2004 (UTC)]]

I have a question. Half of the speech authors are linked to their bios on Wikipedia and the other half are linked to their author pages on Wikisource. Which one should we do? Zhaladshar 13:58, 11 Jun 2004 (UTC)

In my oppinion, links to the author pages on Wiksourse is to be prefered. The author pages should then link to biography pages on those 'pedias that have them.--Christian S 18:11, 11 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Agreed, we have reached a certain critical mass, and as we continue to review we ought to go to links to new author pages. [[PaulinSaudi 12:20, 12 Jun 2004 (UTC)]]

For those looking to add State of the Unions you will find most at americanpresidency.org. [[Jascha 00:59:10 Wed Jul 14 2004 (UTC)]]

I hope y'all don't mind, but I sub-divided the speeches from the year 2000 onwards by individual year, because it was getting quite lengthy, and it's easier to view at a glance. Mosmi 22:36, 8 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Reorganizing page

[edit]

I know in the past we have discussed this, but I am bringing it back up. Would anyone be too upset if I removed all the State of the Union and presidential Inaugural Addresses and put them on their own pages? This page is getting so cluttered with these speeches that finding any other (and due to the work of PaulinSaudi and AllanHainey, we are getting many more speeches) is impossible. —Zhaladshar (Talk) 13:06, 22 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Right at this point, I do not find it to be cumbersome. I like how we can see the flow of history. (Although it will get cumbersome at some point.) Want to see a mess? Go to Wikisource:Historical documents. Act as you will Z, but I do not think we need surgery here, yet. PaulinSaudi 14:14, 22 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
Alright, I'll wait until it finally gets to be a problem (although, I hope it happens soon). And the Historical documents section is a huge mess. Someone really ought to fix it up... —Zhaladshar (Talk) 14:23, 22 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

I don't think that we need to move all the state of the Union & inaugural speeches to their own pages just yet, although with a SotU every year and an Inaugural every 4 these will continue to mount up if there is any concentrated effort to add them all. I think we can wait a little while yet before it gets too cluttered but it is something we may need to do at some time. If we do though it is going to leave the 18th & parts of the 19th c quite bare, but that's not an argument for leaving it just for getting a wider range & variety of speeches. AllanHainey 08:19, 25 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

I thought we had all the SoUs (even though the early ones were not speeches) and all the Inaugurals. Did I miss some? PaulinSaudi 11:55, 25 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
You may know better than me as I'm not American but I'd thought that there was a SotU every year & on wikisource we don't have any for most of the 19th c. It looks like we have all the inaugural speeches, though I haven't counted them. AllanHainey 14:12, 25 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
I started adding the SotU addresses a little while ago, but have stopped for the time being. I have not finished adding them--I think I stopped halfway through the 20th centruy, andI will probably not add any more until we get a page dedicated solely to them (although anyone else can add them). SotU addresses are not constitutionally spelled out as to how often they are given, but precedence is yearly. —Zhaladshar (Talk) 18:18, 25 July 2005 (UTC)Reply
Now that there is a category page devoted to the SotU addresses, should they be added to this page?--Politicaljunkie 23:53, 27 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
We have had Category:State of the Union Addresses since March 2005 but we don't yet have a proper page for the SoU or USA Presidential inaugural speeches with them listed in the same manner as on our speeches page. I think it would be better if we added them to their own page, and linked it to the speeches page, rather than relying on the category page or listing them all on the main speeches page & greatly expanding & cluttering this page. AllanHainey 12:21, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
I put up something on my page, a possible format for all the SoU and inaugural speeches.--Politicaljunkie 22:11, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Now should all the inaugural addresses be deleted from this page since they are all accessible at this page? And should the links on the inaugural speeches to Portal:Speeches be changed to Wikisource:U.S.A. Presidential Inaugural Speeches?--Politicaljunkie 21:17, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, please change all the links accordingly.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 21:30, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
And also delete them from this page?--Politicaljunkie 21:39, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yes, go ahead and remove all links from Portal:Speeches which are contained on Wikisource:U.S.A. Presidential Inaugural Speeches.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 22:00, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
The SoU page is up now. Should they be deleted from this page like the inaugural addresses? That would leave the 1790s with 2 speeches, the 1800s with 3 speeches, and the 1810s with no speeches. However, like AllanHainey said, it would just promote getting a more diverse range of speeches. --Politicaljunkie 14:11, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I say delete them, for the reason you just cited. With all the SotU and Inaugural addresses, they really clutter up the page. This way, people can see what speeces we do offer (aside from the yearly presidential ones), which I think is more helpful to the reader. Also, it could spur people to add speeches we lack. I know Allan's been doing a very good job with this, and more contributors would definitely help.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 16:33, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
This page has many speeches from the late 18th - early 19th century.--Politicaljunkie 16:48, 5 March 2006 (UTC)Reply
Well done on the SOU & Inaugurals. I've added links from the main speeches page to these. I'll look out for some speeches to bulk up the 1790-1819 period. Some handy websites are Bartleby - Orations (though they've been altered to American spelling & some are abridged & would need to be categorised Category:Abridged Speeches if we add them), Speeches by Richard Cobden, foreign policy speeches, Pitt the Elder Speeches. I also note we've now no 2000 speeches & only 1 in 2002, these might be easier to fill up. AllanHainey 12:45, 6 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Suggestion

[edit]

My knowledge on Wikisource is considerably small. However, would organizing famous speeches according to the man or woman who delivered the speech be more comprehensive than the chronological order? It is just a suggestion, as I said, I do not know much about Wikisource or its articles. Einsteinbock 22:17, 7 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Speeches, & all other writings on wikisource, are already noted on the author page of the person who delivered the speech/authored a document. If you are looking for a speech by William Gladstone for example go to Author:William Gladstone (either by searching, clicking on a link from the speeches page or elsewhere or using the address bar) & you'll be able to find everything by that author. The chronological ordering of the speeches page is simply a convenient way of ordering all our speeches on 1 page & of placing the speeches in some form of context, as speeches on the same issue are likely to have been given at around the same time. Resize the margins?

[edit]

Can anyone change the margins on this portal? I tried copying it over from w:Portal:Box-footer but the margins aren't nearly as small as they are on w:Portal:Anime and manga which uses it.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 20:09, 8 July 2006 (UTC)Reply
