The CHARM of JAMIE

Young lovers, who're in love engag'd,
of your deceitful swains beware,
Left by delusions you're persuaded,
and bring yourselves into a snare.

For young men often prove deceitful,
though promises to you they'll make:
My love to me has prov'd ungrateful,
with grief and sorrow my heart will break.

How oft has my true love caress'd me,
and enfolded me in his arms!
And on my tender bosom preis'd me,
enjoying of each others charms.

And so blisses with sweet kisses,
my love and (illegible text) did oy and play:
But now my Jamie's gone and left me,
alas! alas! and well-a day.

I never thought he would prove cruel,
to go and leave me in dispair:
He was my joy and only jewel,
but few with him I could compare.

Now he's gone o'er the raging ocean,
where foaming billows loudly roar,
In stormy ruins in many nations,
I fear I ne'er shall see him more.

My true love was tall and handsome,
straight and proper in every limb;
Could I but obtain the King's ransom,
I ne'er would fancy one but him.

He was affable and good temper'd,
his colour like the damask rose.
His hair's as black s a raven's feather,
his eyes as black as any sloe.

Neptune conduct my dearest jewel,
safe home from the raging main,
And ease my heart that burns like fuel,
for fear I ne'er shall see him again.

When the stormy wind's are blowing,
it fills my heart with woe.
When on my pillow little knowing,
what dangers my love undergo.

But not my Jamie's safe return'd,
and cured my of all my pain;
Like fuel of my heart has burn'd,
for hear I'd ne'er see him again.

Now in wedlock bands I'm fastened
unto the jewel of my heart
In love and mirth to live together.
nothing but death e'er can part.
