ROBERT FITZROY, Esq.
[Captain of 1834.]
This officer is related to the Duke of Grafton’s family. He entered the royal navy in 1818; obtained his first commission on the 7th Sept. 1824; and subsequently served under Captains Sir John Phillimore and Arthur Batt Bingham, in the Thetis frigate, on the Mediterranean and South American stations. In Aug. 1828, he was appointed flag-lieutenant to Rear-Admiral (now Sir Robert W.) Otway, at Rio Janeiro; and in Nov. following, promoted to the command of the Beagle surveying vessel, which he paid off and re-commissioned in June 1831. He is now employed in completing the survey of the Straits of Magellan. His advancement to the rank of captain took place Dec. 3d, 1834.
