Buying a Dream

Hakushū Kitahara

The baby squirrel in sleepy valley is
Crying, crying to the village, to buy a dream—
To buy a dream.

Knock, knock! But not a stir
In the moonlit night, only the sleeping shadow,
Only the sleeping shadow.

Bathe in the grape’s evening dew?
In the tub of the barn, borrow lodging?
Borrow lodging?

Falling into the mortar of the mill,
The valley covered with snow, in a dream he saw,
In a dream he saw.
