This collection of six poems originally appeared as the final section of The Passionate Pilgrim, separated by a title page mid-volume.

This collection has often been attributed to Shakespeare, but only the second composition (On a Day, Alack the Day) is clearly his, with lines that occur in Love's Labour's Lost. The fifth (The Passionate Shepherd to His Love) is verse nearly universally credited to Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593), and the sixth (Address to the Nightingale) to Richard Barnfield (1574-1627)
