South Africa Act Amendment Act, 1957

To amend the South Africa Act, 1909.

Be it enacted by the Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty, the Senate and the House of Assembly of the Union of South Africa, as follows:―
1. (1) Section fifty-six of the South Africa Act, 1909, is hereby amended―
(a) | by the addition to sub-section (1) of the following paragraphs, the existing sub-section becoming paragraph (a):

(b) | by the insertion in sub-section (3) after the word “allowance” of the words “(including any travelling and subsistence allowance)”; | |||||||
(c) | by the insertion in sub-section (5) after the word “allowances” of the words “(other than travelling and subsistence allowances)”; and | |||||||
(d) | by the addition to sub-section (5) of the following paragraph, the existing sub-section becoming paragraph (a):

(2) Sub-section (1) shall be deemed to have come into operation on the first day of January, 1956, and any payment made to any member of the Senate or the House of Assembly after that date, but before the commencement of this section, and intended to cover wholly or in part expenditure incurred by such member in attending any session of Parliament, shall be deemed to have been made by virtue of a determination by the President of the Senate or, as the case may be, the Speaker of the House of Assembly under paragraph (b) of sub-section (1) of section fifty-six of the South Africa Act, 1909, as inserted by paragraph (a) of sub-section (1) of this section.
2. This Act shall be called the South Africa Act Amendment Act, 1957.
