St. Gertrude (1871)
by Arthur Seymour Sullivan

Sullivan composed this tune as a musical setting for Sabine Baring-Gould's hymn "Onward, Christian Soldiers". It was first published in 1871 in an advertisement for Joseph Barnby's Hymnary, published 1872. Sullivan composed this tune at the country home of his friends Ernest and Gertrude Clay-Ker-Seymer, and named the tune in Gertrude's honour.
