California Statutes 1850 (1850)

After the Mexican-American War had ceded California to the United States it was governed by a military government. Gold was discovered in 1848, and soon tens of thousands began pouring into California. With permission from the military commander, the gold-seekers and other local residents elected a constitutional convention to draft a constitution for self-government as a state. This done they proceeded to elect a legislature to draft a codified system of laws in conformance to the constitution. This volume is the result of their labors. California was not formally admitted into the Union until later that year as part of the Compromise of 1850.
