Sweden's Laureate: Selected Poems of Verner von Heidenstam/The Heaviest Road

From Wikisource
THE HEAVIEST ROAD.
Hard do you press on me, dark hand,
And heavily you rest upon my head.
I vowed that unlamenting I would stand;
Boldly set garlands on my hair instead.
The sorrow of the old is other
Than bird-song grief in springtime's glow.
Around me chilling shadows gather.
The heaviest road is still to go.
