Author links?
[edit]The DNB project uses author templates to give a link, an idea that might be worth considering. Getting the list of contributors up allows disambiguation of the initials, so I can check W.H.H. for example, but I couldn't find it. cygnis insignis 09:30, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- I find! Page:A Dictionary of Music and Musicians vol 1.djvu/12, etc. cygnis insignis 09:47, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- I have been working on the Author pages themselves over the while. I know that I find the page setup in this format problematic to link back to the pages that they contributed. So while it has some advantages in display, I am finding that it does have downsides. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:14, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- By the way, I presume that you found it as Author:William Henry Husk. — billinghurst sDrewth
- Yep, thanks. I only know how it works in theory, haven't tried it. You mean to generate a list of the entries they made, in the author ns? And there is not a static page to link, or what links here? Is that the problem? That would be a downside, which pages have you tried. cygnis insignis 14:53, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

- ? I'm aware of the page, I'm not following where the problems lies for you. cygnis insignis 21:19, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
- Was trying to indicate the sort of coding for the link that would be required, and obviously failed miserably. Tried other combinations at some point of time, and have not found anything that has worked. Apologies for being obscure. — billinghurst sDrewth 09:49, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

- I'm glad it was noted before I dived in, thanks. I found some aspects appealing, better browsing and easier to build, but the hiccup seems to derive from the script generated entry. The only static page is in Page:ns and the LST list (subpage) in main, both serving the dictionary 'frame'. We want deeplinks, from the sisters too. cygnis insignis 11:06, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure why you're worrying about this. All we have to do is proofread Page:A_Dictionary_of_Music_and_Musicians_vol_4.djvu/1021 onwards and then transclude the sections to the relevant author pages. Whether a bot can do some of this, I don't know. I suspect that a human mind needs deal with it. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 07:59, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

deeplinks in dictionary
[edit]Re: the A Dictionary of Music and Musicians/Vol 1 model. Have you thought about how we can link entries. I'm not sure I described the problem very well, but there is some musing here. One use would be generating 'static' lists by contributor, on author pages, I would like to deeplink references at the sisters and here. Is this possible?
BTW: the new LST trick seems much better, it 'looks and feels right', and I haven't found any problems so far. cygnis insignis 11:23, 7 October 2010 (UTC)

- Don't go there keep it flat as is EB1911. It makes linking to an entry from Wikipedia templates much easier to code. -- PBS (talk) 14:52, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- We tried it way back, but it didn't work when articles were pushed to eBook formats. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 17:39, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
Problem
[edit]- Grove, George, ed.; A Dictionary of Music and Musicians 1450-1889 (1900), 4 Volumes. Internet Archive.
Volume 1 Volume 2 Volume 3 Volume 4
- Second edition:
Vol. 1 (1904) A–E, Vol. 2 (1906) F–L, Vol. 3 (1907) M–P, Vol. 4 (1908) Q–S, Vol. 5 (1910) T–Z, Appendix
See A Dictionary of Music and Musicians/Ayton, Fanny This is taken from page 149 of volume 1 of the Second edition, not from the first edition and so should not be in this copy.
User:Mpaa your bot MpaaBot, created the page on the 6 June 2013. Why? -- PBS (talk) 14:52, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- I don't remember what I did or where I was on 6 June 2013 ... I can only guess I was executing the bot request mentioned in the summary ...— Mpaa (talk) 22:22, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
Looking further:
- From volume 1 djvu 119
But there is another alphabetic list starting with A in the Appendix in volume 4:
That is where the the entry "Ayton, Fanny" can be found in the 1900 edition.
I think the solution here lies in adding a volume link to header. So I have gone and done this. However I do not think that interlacing the original entries with the appendix entries is desirable in a work that is meant to replicate the original volumes (This is explicitly written in the index header of volume 4) -- PBS (talk) 16:16, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
- There is no problem. This is a late copy of the first (1900) edition. The second half of Vol 4 has various addenda and corriegenda. The intention of the editors was that this work be seen as a single work that happened to be printed in four volumes. Thus explicitly stating the volume the article comes from is unnecessary and therefore was not done when setting up the work. If you examine the articles carefully you will see that those from the Appendix are transcluded in their own previous and next sequence. It is just on the navigation pages that they are interpolated—to make the work useful to the reader and to simplify linking. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 17:51, 23 January 2016 (UTC)
