This story is true. I have read the original letters which are cited in the Appendix as part of my doctoral studies. They are held in the Battye Library in Western Australia. While the story of the Bussells has been embellished by the author, it is in essence correct. The story of the Bussell family is actually richer than appears in this book. The family has been immortalised through the naming of the town Busselton in Western Australia's south west after John Garrett Bussell.
