notes for volumes
[edit]background
[edit]- The journal is noted for its botanical and horticultural descriptions, and its botanical illustrations. See also: wikipedia:Curtis's Botanical Magazine.
- The first fourteen volumes are titled The Botanical Magazine (1787-1800)
- Volume 15 and on are titled 'Curtis's Botanical Magazine'.
- The volumes may be cited by either title, abbreviated as Bot. Mag. or Curtis's Bot. Mag. respectively.
- The numbering of the plates and volumes is continuous, but also has volume numbering by series, eg, "VOL. V. OF THE NEW SERIES; Or Vol. LVIII. of the Whole Work." (Curtis's Botanical Magazine/Volume 58).
sources
[edit]- Public domain until plate number [####?] Several sources have been used in the transcription of the pages. Text may be available as transcriptions or attempted OCR.
- This site has the images and text of the first 20 volumes, these are ordered by the "English names" of a volume's index. The images are good quality only.
- Botanicus is also producing an online scan and an uncorrected OCR of the volumes, these are sourced from an american university library's set.
- Images: Image searches can produce a large number of variants. Colouring in later volumes was inconsistent between copies, scan quality also varies. Mechanical colouring occurs in later volumes, giving uniformity to the original plates. These may briefly become available as scans from online art sales. Images have been found at the followings sites;
- as above: nal.usda.gov/curtis/
- http://fax.libs.uga.edu/QK1xC981/cbmmenu.html (University of Georgia Libraries) viewed with their open source DjVu, one of several versions available.
- Biodiversity Heritage Library: Curtis's botanical magazine.
- Gutenberg have complete transcriptions of the earlier volumes, used as a source for The Botanical Magazine/Volume 2.
progress
[edit]- Several pages were created to identify solutions for the ongoing project.
- The text was transcribed from reproductions of the original document.
- Title pages, with indices, were adapted from the original volumes format: The Botanical Magazine/Volume_XV
- The title page; The Botanical Magazine, was created, listing the volumes. Links to later volumes were moved to Curtis's Botanical Magazine.
- Pages of later volumes were moved (eg. Curtis's Botanical_Magazine/Volume_XV/505), redirects have been left for these. Links to other wikis may already exist and need to be resolved.
- Images in the pages were uploaded to commons with titles such as: Image:The Botanical Magazine-Vol 19_text 715.jpg.
- Various pages in several volumes were drafted, with an interim format, from the sources above.
- A list of Banksia and Dryandra species was completed.
- The Botanical Magazine/Volume 2 was completed using the source.
- Complete volumes are uploaded to Commons as .djvu and .pdf files. The plates, botanical illustrations, are also extracted from the same source as .png files. Indexes for these were created and added to The Botanical Magazine, numbers 1–14, and Curtis's Botanical Magazine/Volume 58.
