I read once that he was attached to the Imperial Russian Staff during Napoleon's invasion of Russia in 1812 (Military Attache or one of them). As such he would have met Carl von Clausewitz who was then in Russian service. I remember a quote from January or February 1813 'It was quite mild today and we just wore our uniform jackets' (not verbatim). I'm afraid that I can't quote the source, it was a long time ago. The Victoria & Albert Museum has an original copy of his Uniforms of the British Empire according to the 1812 Regulations. Perhaps someone would like to follow this up.
