Joseph Cooper Walker was the eldest of three children born to Cooper Walker (1725-1799), a Dublin cabinet-maker, and his wife (and second cousin), Mary Gordon. He was educated in Dublin by the Rev. Thomas Ball, but also received private tutoring at Castle Dawson, Blackrock, where, as an asthma sufferer, he was probably sent for the sea air. Unlike his brother, Samuel, he did not go to university, and worked instead as a clerk in the Irish treasury. Information added by Scotire 17 Oct. 2012
