The following is an inspiring story of honesty, villainy, revenge, and love, set in the beautiful 17th-century west-country of England. Over ten television adaptations have been made, some better than others. As far as I can make out, the best and truest to the book is by far the BBC 2000 adaptation, and though I have seen none of the others, I would heartily recommend this adaptation as it is one of my absolutely favourite films.
A big thank you to Project Gutenberg for all the work they have put toward converting the source text to an electronic form. It is from their text that this Wikisource book has been assembled.
