At first blush, is this about the ignorance of society to the horrors of war along with their inability to understand it and their inability to express what they do understand? The War between the States and the Battle of Chickamauga in particular was not a glorious adventure but a bloody grueling crawl down a slope of inhumanity. The image of the "clown" has haunted me since I first read the piece 40 years ago. The Author was nicknamed, "Bitter Bierce" for good reason.
