1575 is an early date - Cotton's translation is only a part of Montaigne's Essays
Here is what I find on Wikipedia :

"Chronology :

Montaigne heavily edited Essays at various points in his life. Sometimes he would insert just one word, while at other times he would insert whole passages. Many editions mark this with letters as follows:

  • A: passages written 1571-1580, published 1580
  • B: passages written 1580-1588, published 1588
  • C: passages written 1588-1592, published 1595 (posthumously)

Analysis of the differences and additions between editions shows how Montaigne's thoughts evolved over time. Not unremarkably, he does not seem to remove previous writings, even when they conflict with his newer views."

I removed the old text which comes from [1]. This is not what it pretends to be, the translation of Charles Cotton which is available at Gutenberg. Yann 14:50, 11 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

There seems to be a complete grouping of all essays at Project Gutenberge here. - Mtmelendez 17:39, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Rework

[edit]

I see that Project Gutenberg has a reasonably complete compilation of Cotton's translations, divided by volumes and chapters, much easier to organize and upload than the current version. As such, I'm planning on redoing the entire page basing my work on the Project Gutenberg text. We can then verify the text with other websites to assure completeness and accuracy, but I think it's best to start with the most complete and reliable source, which I think is Gutenberg. Any objections? - Mtmelendez 17:39, 29 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
