- Just as an addendum to this note: For anyone who, like I just did, might wonder whether "single" is a misquote ("single to your grateful hearts his preeminent worth") -- I thought perhaps it ought to be "signal" -- I checked for an archaic meaning of "single" as a verb and found "To sequester; to withdraw; to retire" on Wiktionary, and also confirmed that the above-cited source uses "single", so I left the text alone.
