Talk:The Waste Land (Eliot, 1922)

[edit]Would anyone object to removing the ToC? I think it would look nicer and given the length of the poem it isn't really necessary. 130.85.249.236 18:46, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
Notes
[edit]I think Eliot's consciously negligent notes are far more relevant than actual objetive references. Of course it's just my opinion. If anyone thinks otherwise we could include both again. StephenDaedalus 20:05, 20 February 2012 (UTC)
Misprint in Horace Liveright edition
[edit]The first word in line 42 of the Horace Liveright edition is misspelled as "Od'". Subsequent editions correct this error with "Oed'", which is Eliot's English rendition of Wagner's "Öd'", from Tristan und Isolde. Also, the entire line "Oed' und leer das Meer." should properly be italicized Oed und leer das Meer. – so that is actually two separate misprints in the line. The preceding quatrain Frisch weht der Wind / Der Heimat zu / Mein Irisch Kind, / Wo weilest du? is properly italicized. (Line 42 is correctly left-aligned, whereas the quatrain is also correctly indented.)
I'm not familiar with Wikisource's protocol on indicating errors in sources, but it would seem that line 42 ought to be footnoted, and a corrected line given. One concern is if a reader tries to read that line aloud, the pronunciation of Od will certainly be "odd". Milkunderwood (talk) 21:11, 8 May 2016 (UTC)
- For any response to me, please reply at Wikipedia; I would never think to look at Wikisource. Thanks. Milkunderwood (talk) 21:42, 8 May 2016 (UTC)
