Notes: | This speech was also reported in the newspaper under the title “The Questions of the Hour.” A clipping of the article is in the economics collection of the Harvard University libraries. Unfortunately, the name of the newspaper is not recorded. A cursory comparison showed only minor punctuation differences between the two versions, except for one substantial change in a word: “over the tariff of 1864” in the article became “in the tariff of 1864” in Bancroft's edition. |
