Transcriber's notes

• The word bobry is used by the character Mr. Dunneston several times throughout the text. I'm unsure what the word bobry (clearly used as an adjective) is supposed to mean, but it is certainly not a real (at least attested) English word. My original hypothesis was that the author could have heard a British speaker say a certain word that sounded like "bobry," and he didn't know how the word would be spelled, but I haven't found evidence of this at all so I didn't include a [sic] on the word in the transcription. It could have been an adjective the author made up to sound British, or perhaps to substitute a more objectionable adjective like "bloody."
• The town name Polporru seems to be either a misspelling or purposeful renaming of the actual town in the Cornwall area called Polperro; since this spelling is used several times consistently throughout the novel, it's quite possible it was a purposeful renaming, so as not to conflate these events in the story with happenings in the actual town.
• I'm also unsure what poggled means or whether it's a misspelling of an actual word.
