I believe I found an error in the transcription of “The Shunned House.” It is a minor change, but it does clear up the meaning considerably. Halfway through the second paragraph on page 427, the current sentence reads:

“I found what I had half expected, that where the shunned house now stood the Roulets had laid out their graveyard behind a one-story and attic cottage, and that no record of any transfer of graves existed, document, indeed, ended in much confusion; and I was...”

In my edition of the story, the sentence reads, “I found what I had half expected, that where the shunned house now stood the Roulets had laid out their graveyard behind a one-story and attic cottage, and that no record of any transfer of graves existed. The document, indeed, ended in much confusion; and I was...”

I don’t know if the original text of the story in Weird Stories includes this error. My version of the text is from the Del Rey paperback of At the Mountains of Madness and Other Tales of Terror (Lovecraft, H. P., Ballantine Books: New York, Seventh Printing, January 1982, p. 124, ISBN 0-345-30232-X)

As I said, I have no idea if the page’s current version is a faithful transcript of the issue of Weird Tales that originally contained the story. Also, I have no experience in editing Wikisource documents and don’t want to overstep, so I’m not making any edits myself.unsigned comment by Bop52465 (talk) .

  • Bop52465: I have made the change. It was an error on the part of the person who transcribed the text. The matching page can be found at Page:Weird Tales volume 30 number 04.djvu/43; you are wholly welcome to make the change yourself, and any similar changes you might wish to make in the future. For future reference, if you want to ask a question, add the code {{helpme}} at the top of the talk page; this will notify experienced editors that you need help. Thank you for bringing this up.
