This template creates the en dash character, used primarily for to–from ranges. For example, "September 1939–September 1945."

Keyboard shorcuts

Instead of this template:

  • Mac users can use keystroke option + - for this character.
  • Windows users can use keystroke combination alt + 0150 (on the num keypad).
  • Linux users: ctrl + shift + U + 2013.

  • To hyphenate words, use a hyphen; this is available on nearly all keyboards.
  • For dashes that divide sentence fragments, use an em dash. {{--}} renders an em dash without surrounding hairspaces.
  • For longer dash marks typically used to hyphenate names, especially in older novels, use the {{longdash}} template.
  • For a variable-length mid-height bar consider {{bar}}.
