Template:PD-old-collective/sandbox
This work is a collective work (i.e. the product of multiple authors), and was published outside the US, and not all of the authors have known death dates. It was published before January 1, 1929, so it is in the public domain in the US.
A reasonably diligent search for authors who died was not conducted, so according to Wikimedia Commons guidelines, this work can only be assumed to be free of copyright in its country of origin if it was published more than 150 years ago (before 1874). Therefore, it must be hosted locally at Wikisource. If it can be conclusively demonstrated that all parts of this work are in the public domain in the country of origin, the file should be moved to Commons. Individual parts of this work may be in the public domain in the country of origin based on the authorship for that part alone.

Usage
[edit]- checked set to
yes
to indicate that a "reasonably diligent search" has not turned up copyrighted material in the country of origin (usually this means no author has died recently enough to retain copyright). - deathyear the latest known death date of any author of the work. If this is given, checked is not used or needed.
This template is used for non-US collective works (newspapers, magazines, journals, etc), where this is enough doubt that all the separate parts are in the public domain in the country of origin that the work cannot be hosted at Commons. However, as it was published over 95 years ago, it is in the public domain in the US and may be hosted at Wikisource.
Usually this happens because:
- A definitive list of all contributing authors and other people with creative input (e.g. illustrators and translators) is not known or has not yet been determined. In that case:
- The work was published less than 120 years ago (more recently than 1903), and a "reasonably diligent search" has been made and did not find any authors with active copyright in the work, though their presence cannot be completely ruled out (e.g. there are parts of still-unknown authorship); or
- The work was published less than 150 years ago (more recently than 1873), and a "reasonably diligent search" has not been made.
- Authors with subsisting copyright (e.g. British authors who died less than 70 years ago) have been found.
Files using this template must also use {{do not move to commons}} with the expiry set to either 121 or 151 years after publication, as appropriate.
When to move to Commons
[edit]If a file is marked with this template, and can a definitely proved to be in the public domain in the country of origin, it should be moved to Commons with the appropriate template (for example Commons:Template:PD-old-auto-expired with the deathyear set appropriately).
Likewise, works marked with this template will eventually pass the 120/150 year cut-off dates, and should be moved to Commons at that point too (and can use commons:Template:PD-old-assumed).
